KIWI




Habitat
Where does it live and nest?


Kiwi nest in burrows and under the ground.
Diet
What does it eat?
How does it eat?

It eats insects, grubs, worms and other things. It uses its beak to dig for food plus its nose is on the tip so it can smell food.
Dangers
What predators and dangers does it face?

Its predators are dogs, stoats, rats and other mammals. People have burnt and chopped the forest down so the kiwis have to find a new home.   
Survival
What helps it survive?

It uses its legs to kick. It uses its brown fur to camouflage in the bushes and dirt. It uses its fur to keep warm in the winter.

Habitat
Where does it live and nest?

Kiwi live in a burrow under a tree, that is like a hole in the ground.
It lives in forests of the upper North Island.
Diet
What does it eat?
How does it eat?

Its diet is insects, grubs, worms, spiders  and fallen fruits. It eats by scratching around with his claws and feet for food in the forest leaf litter, probing the ground with their long beak to find and dig out earth worms.
Dangers
What dangers does the kiwi face?

The kiwi is hunted by dogs, stoats, wild pigs, rats and other mammals.  They eat chicks and eggs.


People have also burnt and chopped down the forest where kiwi live.

Survival
What helps it survive?

Its powerful kick can defend its chicks. Kiwi can camouflage with the leaves and bark on the ground. The kiwi has poor eyesight.

BIKE WISE DAY


 Papakowhai School walked and biked to Aotea Lagoon for Bike Wise Day.
