Sunny Weather Maths

Well it seems that we are finally seeing some good weather, so Rimu 3 decided to make the most of it with some outside Maths today. Here’s what we’ve been up to.

In Rimu 3 we have been learning about directions and what way is anticlockwise, clockwise, quarter of a turn, whole turn, left and right. Mrs Lewis and Mrs Goh made a trail out of chalk. We had to have a blind fold over our eyes (or just close them!) and we had a buddy who told us to go left, right, anticlockwise, clockwise, quarter of a turn, half a turn and a whole turn. It was pretty hard cause most people got muddled up. Written by Madeleine Alosio

In Rimu 3, for Maths we have been learning about directions. We have learnt some direction words and had some fun outside. We used a trail of chalk, got a partner and told them what way to go.

The words we learnt and found out what they mean were…

Clockwise – Turning right
Anticlockwise – Turning Left
Full turn – Spinning around completely
½ turn – ½ a full turn so you are facing the other way
¼ turn – Just ¼ of a full turn!
These words were helpful to us when we did our trail.

BP Technology Challenge

At the BP Technology Challenge we made all sorts of stuff out of newspaper, sticky tape and string. It was fun finding ways of making stuff like swings, stars and a bird house. In the competition we came third. By Russell

GOING FOR GOLD

Olympic Running
In the last 10min of the race I was coming 5th. “Focus Ava, keep going” I said to myself. So I ran a little faster. But just then an Australian raced in front of me. I said to myself “I have to keep it up”. So I ran faster and finally I caught up to her. 3 minutes to go and I’m really, really, REALLY nervous now. I sprinted sooo fast, as fast as lightning.  Finally I ran past two people and I was coming first.  I could see the finish line. I could hear “Go Ava, go Ava, go Ava!” Yaaah, I got gold! Ava Grigg has won gold!

I am waiting at the start line. I feel nervous and have butterflies in my tummy. I am the BMX champion of NZ and have won gold before and I want to win again. Beep, beeeep, beeeep! The race starts. I am pedalling for my life. One bump nearly tripped me over.  Instantly I am in bronze medal position. I can see the finish line now. I am already past silver. I cross the finish line – GOLD medal!

I held the javelin ready to start. Through the air it soared, over the grass and landed where I wanted it to land. But I still felt nervous and worried. Then a loud speaker boomed “1st place Fern Gough and 2nd place Jennifer Coulston and  3rd place Ava Grigg’’  I got silver! What a relief and good thing that was over! I heard the crowd cheering and saw my coach crying.

My name is Lara, I am a gymnast in the Olympics 2012 with Michaela, Maddy, Erana and Chantelle. We are playing for NZ. We are up next in the gymnastics. I’m on to the bars and so is the rest of my team. They call my name. My heart is pumping with excitement as I put on the sticky powder. My team wishes me “Good luck”. I enter the room and jump onto the bar, flip around the bar, do a hand stand on the bar and repeat it. Then I jump to the low bar back to the high bar, and flip to the ground. The rest of the team come in. Ten minutes later the judge gives out the scores. I came first, Michaela and Maddy came third and Chantelle and Erana came second. I was the winner of the group – hooray!

One minute till my race, now I go on the diving board. I feel nervous and worried that I am going to make a mistake on my back flip. I see people cheering with my coach near the diving board saying “Go Madeleine, go Madeleine!” Now I do my final jump.  I do a double back flip and a front flip.  I get out of the pool and see my results, I come first place! Ella comes second place for Tonga and Portia comes third for Samoa.  What a fantastic result! We all jump in the pool and splash water at each other.

There goes Dylan pulling up to 1st place. There he goes zooming over the bumps and doing drifts over the ramps” the commentator screams into the microphone.  I can hear “Go DYLAN, Go DYLAN” as I zoom past the others. “YES, YES, YES, Dylan has won gold” screams the commentator. He asks "how do you feel?" "I feel awesome, so awesome!" I reply. Go Dylan!
